2 Trailers of Jan de Rijk Logistics equipped with Side wings

Brothers Gandert and Hjalmar van Raemdonck,

founders of Ephicas, developed a side wing for trucks

that makes them more aerodynamic. The improved

aerodynamics of the ‘Ephicas Sidewing’ lead to

considerably lower fuel consumption and thus

considerably reduced fuel costs. The side wings were

developed in tu Delft’s wind tunnel and then tested on

the road. In a test spanning a four-week period, a fuel

saving of 9 percent was achieved.

In October 2009 the first finished side wing rolled off

the production line. The brothers own their success

to perfect teamwork: They say that Gandert is more

the scientist and Hjalmar is more of an entrepreneur,

and that they complement each other perfectly.

The brothers cannot complain about a lack of interest

in their product: The transportation world is very

excited about the wing, because it increases fuel

efficiency and thus reduces CO2 emissions. In addition,

the product not only reduces noise levels

but also makes sure that cyclists do not end up under

the vehicles’ wheels. Extensive road tests were

commenced in November with various major fleet

owners, such as TNT, DHL, Jan de Rijk Logistics,

The Greenery, and GE.
